Since 1898, 15 Virginia Beach officers have been killed in the line of duty, according to the Virginia Beach Police Foundation. This weekend’s deaths brought the number to 17. The last time a city police officer was killed in the line of duty was August 2008. That incident also occurred in the Green Run area.

Officers Christopher Reese, 30, and Cameron Girvin, 25 — whose wife is expecting their first child — were shot dead during a routine traffic stop in Virginia Beach.

"Our hearts are heavy today as we mourn the loss of two heroic Virginia Beach police officers who were tragically killed in the line of duty last night. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, the Virginia Beach police department, and the law enforcement community," Rep. Jen Kiggins, whose district in Congress includes Virginia Beach, said.
