State health officials say the mosquitoes are the first in Maine to test positive for any mosquito-borne virus this year.

West Nile virus is the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the continental U.S. Most people who are infected with the virus are asymptomatic, but others can develop fever, and about 1 in 150 people who are infected develop a serious and sometimes fatal illness.

The individual lives in Plum Borough, an eastern suburb of Pittsburgh. They are recovering at home, according to the county, and no further details about their identity are expected to be released.
