Five diesel pumps in California have run out of digits. The dispensers are showing $9.999 a gallon, the highest figure their hardware can display, according to a September 10, 2026 post from GasBuddy head of petroleum analysis Patrick De Haan,

The EIA raised its estimate for U.S. distillate crack spreads this year to 94 cents a gallon from 84 cents a gallon. It trimmed the estimate for 2027 to 63 cents a gallon from 67 cents a gallon. Crack spreads are the difference between the price of a barrel of crude oil and the products made from it.

In its September Short-Term Energy Outlook, EIA projected retail diesel will reach an average of $4.40 a gallon in 2027, a 33-cent increase from its prior forecast of $4.07. EIA also raised its 2026 retail diesel price forecast by 4.4%, to $5.07 a gallon from $4.85.

The average diesel price in the U.S. reached $6 per gallon on Friday, and $8 in California, setting new all-time highs and raising the cost of transportation amid fuel supply disruptions caused by the Ukraine and Iran wars.

Petrobras wants to raise diesel prices ‌at its refineries but is waiting for the Brazilian government to take measures to shield consumers from ​the increase, Reuters reported.
