A new wildfire was reported 2:33 a.m. Oct. 7 in Riverside County, California. Highway 2 Fire has been burning on federal land managed by the Bureau of Land Management for 29 hours. There is no update on the containment progress of the fire and its cause remains undetermined.

California authorities say metal shrapnel from an exploding artillery shell hit and damaged a state highway patrol vehicle as the Marine Corps fired live rounds over a freeway during exercises observed by Vice President JD Vance.

According to CHP, the explosive ordnance that was fired over the freeway detonated overhead prematurely, striking two patrol vehicles and damaging one.
