Dangerously hot conditions hit states up and down the West Coast over the weekend, owing to a persistent heat wave stretching from the Pacific Northwest to California and the desert Southwest.

Parts of California, Oregon and Washington state will experience extreme heat at least through Tuesday, forecasters said.

A record temperature of 102 was recorded Friday at the Portland International Airport. The previous record for Aug. 22 was 98 degrees, set in 1942. The record for Aug. 23 is 101, set in 1988, and we are expected to tie that record today.

The strong area of high pressure remains overhead through early next week, but the airmass very slowly cools. We also don’t see a significant surge of cooler marine air off the Pacific until Monday night.
