The first operational batch of Project Kuiper satellites reached orbit Monday, kickstarting the deployment of a long-delayed broadband constellation.

A competitor to SpaceX’s Starlink, the aim of Project Kuiper is to bring the world online, by offering high-speed connectivity in remote regions. Amazon says it plans to make the service accessible by offering affordable plans and outdoor antennae.

Amazon, a company that Jeff Bezos started as an online bookseller decades ago, launched the first batch of 27 internet satellites for its ‘Kuiper’ broadband internet constellation on Monday. It aims to compete with SpaceX Starlink.
