The FCC has signed off on the $20 billion Verizon and Frontier Communications merger. This federal agency approval will allow Verizon to significantly expand its fiber reach and subscriber base, which is presently limited primarily to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.

Verizon’s $20 billion deal to acquire the fiber internet provider Frontier is officially happening. On Friday, the Federal Communications Commission signed off on the merger, which will allow Verizon to “upgrade and expand” Frontier’s existing fiber networks.

Verizon Communications Inc. won Federal Communications Commission approval for its $9.6-billion acquisition of Frontier Communications Parent Inc. after agreeing to agency demands to pare back diversity initiatives in line with President Donald Trump’s policies.
