STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The New York City Health Department has confirmed the first known human case of West Nile virus on Staten Island this year. The case was detected through routine blood donation screening, according to statement from the agency.
Two Queens residents contracted West Nile Virus, marking New York City's first human cases in 2025, the health department said Friday. Officials also said the virus was also detected in blood donations from two other individuals, one residing in Brooklyn and the other on Staten Island.
A second person has died of West Nile virus this summer in South Dakota, according to the state Department of Health's dashboard. A total of 16 human cases had been reported statewide as of Aug. 8.
