An Israeli military operation has uprooted tens of thousands of Palestinians who can’t break their fast in their own homes and don’t know when, or if, they will ever return.

Iftar -- the traditional meal that Muslims eat to break their daylong fasts during Ramadan -- this year is a lonely affair for the Ararawi family, Palestinian people displaced from the refugee camp in the Israeli-occupied West Bank they have long called home.

A charity kitchen in the occupied West Bank has expanded its usual operations to help displaced Palestinians trying to mark the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Intisar Nafe’, an activist displaced from the Tulkarem camp, said she had taken pride in cooking for her community. Her small kitchen had been a refuge, her meals a gesture of care. Her iftar table would have been filled with musakhan, a fragrant chicken dish, or maftoul, hand-rolled couscous.

Thousands of worshipers attended Friday prayer at al-Aqsa compound in the Old City of Jerusalem. Many arrived from the West Bank after Israel allowed men over 55 and women over 50 to enter Jerusalem to perform the prayers during Ramadan.
