The Boston Red Sox (70-59) and the New York Yankees (69-59) continue their American League East rivalry series on Saturday. Boston has taken the first two games, with a 1-0 win over the Yankees on Friday.

As the Red Sox try to pick up their second win in as many nights Friday in the Bronx, they’ll do so with their newest player making his major league debut in center field.

The 22-year-old Red Sox prospect allowed just one run, one hit and no walks while striking out nine in 5 innings. He reached 98.6 mph with his fastball.

Lefthander Steven Matz, a 34-year-old Stony Brook native, is a new member of the Red Sox after being traded by the Cardinals ahead of last month’s deadline. A career starter who spent his first six seasons with the Mets, Matz has transitioned to a relief role — at least for now.

One of the first stories I wrote for the Globe was about the Red Sox giving a tryout to a mysterious lefthanded fireballer from Cuba named Aroldis Chapman in 2009. Chapman was 21 at the time and had established residence in Andorra after defecting from Cuba during a tournament in the Netherlands.

The Yankees offense was overmatched again by Brayan Bello — as well as Aroldis Chapman, who closed out the game in the ninth.

Brayan Bello’s dominant, seven-inning start Friday was more than just another stellar outing against the Yankees in a long line of them. It was yet another reminder that Bello has emerged as a staff force so far in 2025.
