Whooping Crane Identification, All About Birds, Cornell Lab of Ornithology
The Whooping Crane is the tallest bird in North America and one of the most awe-inspiring, with its snowy white plumage, crimson cap, bugling call, and graceful courtship dance. It's also among our rarest birds and a testament to the tenacity and creativity of conservation biologists. The species declined to around 20 birds in the 1940s but ...

The whooping crane is one of the world’s rarest birds and is listed as endangered in the United States. Conversion of the species’ prairie and wetland habitat to farmland and unregulated hunting led to the decline of this species both in Louisiana and across the nation. In 2011, LDWF and partners began a project to return whooping cranes to the state for the first time since 1950, releasing 10 juvenile cranes into the wild at White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area. Typically Whooping Crane calls all sound similar (at least to human ears) however one of our females has a more “goose-like” honk, which will make it easy to ID her even without transmitter or band data, once we are able to figure out which of the two female companions is actually making the sound! Here’s a short video of the whooping crane juveniles shortly after they were released from the top-netted pen last week! They explored the open pen for a while before a few of them took off, landing in the open marsh. All seven have remained around the pen so far. | Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries - Whooping Cranes

From the field ~ There's one more Whooping Crane in the wild! Balerion, or 79-19, was released last night in Green Lake County, Wisconsin, near adult Whooping Cranes 67-15 and 3-17. By releasing the chick near an existing pair, our goal is for the adults to “adopt” 79-19 and teach her their migratory route this fall. The young female was parent-reared at our headquarters this year by a Whooping Crane pair. Learn more about Whooping Crane reintroduction: bit.ly/311Eej1 | International Crane Found

Sound up! 🥰 In captivity, whooping crane eggs are monitored throughout the incubation period to ensure the embryo is developing and progressing properly, typically through weighing and candling. Once the embryo has grown large enough, movement of the egg can actually be observed. In the final few days, the embryo breaks into the aircell where it breathes air for the first time and is able to vocalize. Observing strong movement and hearing peeping is a good indication the chick is in the correct

Audubon Species Survival Center is rearing 13 endangered whooping crane chicks! Three of these chicks are currently being reared by adults in our facility, while the other 10 are being costume-reared by our animal care experts. To reinforce the habit of the chicks keeping a healthy distance from people and to prevent them from imprinting on humans, our staff wear a white cotton crane costume. The chicks learn to eat by watching the costumed crane experts peck the ground with a fake crane head, a

The recently released juveniles are exploring their new surroundings, and two (females L3-24 and L4-24) have made a connection with a wild-hatched individual! This morning, the wild-hatched crane was observed providing food items to female L3-24, a behavior normally seen in parent-offspring relationships. We're thrilled to see this connection form so quickly and hope the trio remains together! | Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries - Whooping Cranes

Last Tuesday we caught female, L14-17 in Jefferson County, TX and brought her back to Louisiana, where she was released on White Lake WCA property. Sadly, she had lost her mate last summer but never made an attempt to return to LA, instead remaining on and near the territory she had occupied with her mate. Unfortunately, there were no other whooping cranes in the area so she had no chance of finding a new mate. The capture, transport, and release all went well and we are thrilled that on Tuesday

We saw 107 Whooping Cranes today...central SK. Saskatchewan is the best place in the world to see them. In addition, we saw 4 bald eagles, Canada, Cackling and Snow Geese and a pond with Tundra Swans, one Sandhill Crane with the whoopers, and we even heard the trumpeting Whooper call. I was extremely grateful for this opportunity! ❤️ There are only around 830 of these birds in the world - in captivity and in the wild. Their comeback, after being hunted to near extinction, is slow. They only mate
