Like giant roller shutters, these joints allow the deck of the bridge to expand and contract in response to wind loading, traffic loading and temperature. These joints were originally scheduled to be replaced in 2009 but the work will now be carried out at significantly reduced cost and without disruption to traffic thanks to the Queensferry Crossing.
