The Great Gig in the Sky: on this day in 1973, a 25-year-old Clare Torry recorded the iconic vocals over the track in 2 takes, completely improvised— her only instruction; sing about death, but without using words. She was paid just £30 for the session and was credited as a singer, but not as a songwriter. Because it was a woman’s voice. And her voice on a rock album inspired me. At a young age. As a girl. Hear
