"Drying up" cows today. Here's how it works! We average around 4 to 5 cows a week that we dry up. It's important that we give them at least 60 days to allow their udders to involute and then go thru mammogenesis before calving. (basically the shrinking and then re creating of the cells that produce milk) We also monitor their diet so they don't enter their dry period with too much weight, if they are fat then they could have a metabolic disorder when they calve again.
