On August 30 1978, the body of Kenya’s founding father, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, was taken from Nairobi to his rural home in Gatundu for a final overnight vigil. It was a deeply symbolic gesture, a return to the soil that raised him, the land from which his long journey to national leadership had begun.
